I get asked all the time about what equipment I use to record audiobooks and videos. I’ve experimented with dozens of mics, cameras, and accessories over the years. I obviously have my current favorites, but I also recognize that some of you may be looking for solutions at a variety of price points — so I’ve created multiple categories below.
Here’s what I’m currently using:
Audiobook Recording Mic: Neuman TLM 102
Audio Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
Headphones: Sony MDR7506 Studio Monitor Headphones
Video Audio Interface/On the Go Recorder: Zoom H5 Handy Recorder
Audio Editing Software: Audacity
Below you’ll find audio and video equipment segmented into different price tiers. All of the items listed below are items that I have personally tried and recommend.

Starter/Low Budget Options
*These are all USB microphones. They plug directly into your computer and DO NOT require the use of a separate audio interface or "preamp."
It’s important to note that you may not get the same audio quality with a lower end mic, however, if you are just getting started and have a limited budget, these will allow you to get your feet wet with audiobook and video production.
*All of these options require a separate audio interface such as the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 in order to connect them to your computer. The first two options have the interface included in the bundle. The rest do not.
